Improving your Writing skills

Writing skills is an art. We are not born writers but you know that we have been
writing throughout of our lives. We are actively writing for office presentation, social media, resume building and whatsoever.
What about building our writing skills? How much effort we put in our writing content to stand out? We hardly think of those things. We just write and send to the recipient. But If we give a closer look, we will find so many fallacies in our writing. How come we improve our writing skills? We all can write but improvement turns them into accuracy and you will reap results. Without wasting any time, lets dig down and improve our writing skills in the following ways mentioned below.

1)Nourish your grammar

We may have studied grammar classes well in our school days. But still you will find people making frequent grammar mistakes in writing and speaking as well. Why are they making mistakes? Answer is simple, they hardly look into those mistakes. But in reality making mistakes in grammar is a big mistake be it on paper or at exams or while communicating to your business clients. Grammar is an indispensable requirement for a successful writer. Usage of tense, nouns, adjectives, adverbs, gerunds, participles defines the basic grammar.

2)Create your own writing template

You must create your own writing template.
The basic template of writing applicable to any sorts – email, letter, discussion should cater the following .

Introduction/preamble

There should be a minimal introduction to what you are writing .It doesn’t depend how many sentences you will use. May be couple of lines but not too big paragraph.

Description

This is the real content where you describe in details to your recipient or the readers. This should be a long paragraph mentioning the details about the topic of discussion.

Conclusion

Every writing document/article must have a conclusion template where you will make your pitch in coherent with the topic of discussion. Make a cogent appeal to your conclusion so readers may get glued to your writing .

3)Keep it simple and sweet

Keep your writing structure simple and sweet . People should comprehend your writing easily. Don’t use complex word or jargons and make your writing overwhelming. In simple words, try to explain all the details without skipping the main points.

4)Structure your sentences well

Don’t write cluttered sentences. Sentence construction should be smooth. Readers should glide down your sentences quickly without feeling bored. They should cover all the paragraphs at ease.

5)Proper punctuation

Proper punctuation is a basic ingredient of great writing skills.Learn how to use all the punctuation marks, quotes, commas, colons, exclamation marks.Wrong punctuation will deter your good writing content. So pay attention on the punctuations.

6)Make a unique writing style

If you want to make yourself a brand , you should have own writing style.People should identify you by looking into your story, content.
Such should be the impact of your story. To meet this, you need to follow your structure. It can be your template, usage of metaphors, giving comic short stories to support your content. Go ahead and build your brand. As a writer, that is the great satisfaction when people identify your brand by your sheer writing skills.

7)Be inspired by fellow writers

Always be inspired . All superstars in all fields are inspired by the giants in the specific fields. Authors have no exception. You pick up the book of your favorite and feel inspired. No one can’t deny the fact. Never plagiarise anyone’s work ever in any field.Only feel inspired by the hard work the masters’ put into the work. See their craftsmanship skills in writing and feel that no body is born writer.Everyone took time and hard work to get the name and fame.

8)Mastering metaphors, idioms, phrases

Before writing, open a notepad and list down all sorts of metaphors, phrases and understand them very well. Use them while writing your creative topics. These gives spices to your writing enticing the readers. I suggest first master these stuffs before writing your creative stuff.

9)Mastering high octane adjectives

As you might have seen in newspaper, strong adjectives are used to describe a simple report. Why the editors use such stuffs, you know the answer. The moment you see the term in the newspaper, you are glued to the entire stuff and continue reading the entire subject. That’s a way of enticing the reader.

10)Make catchy headlines

Probably the most enticing and most important stuff in your writing. If you really want to make content that goes viral, catchy headlines are must. Use catchy words or phrases on top to catch the attention of your at first go itself. Your headline should decide the catchy content you are writing on. Be innovative and be creative .

11)Understand your audience

We frequently misunderstand our audience.Know your audience what content are they looking for. Now if your audience is looking for different content and you sending them a different topic, your work will not get the recognition. So better plan and do homework about your target audience and your relevant topic of discussion.

12)Make writing a habit

If you want to be writer, you need to be disciplined. Make a habit of writing everyday at specific whatever convenient for you. If you are writing a novel, write a chapter daily. When new ideas pop out, immediately pen down your thoughts. Remember creative ideas arrive suddenly. Don’t miss them.

13)Soliloquy:

The best way of writing improvement is talking to yourself. It may sound weird but believe me, go in front of a mirror and speak to yourself loudly. You will come to know that whether you are speaking correctly, using right words to address yourself. Remember a great speaker is always a great writer. Writing and reading is directly proportional. Grab and mirror and talk to yourself on whatever ideas you have gathered on your specify topic. This will definitely improve your writing skills.

14)Editing to be done in beast mode level

Once you are done with your writing, simply don’t publish or send your article.Editing is the final and very important part of writing. Every time you need to edit when you write a paragraph, a story, an article. It needs to be done in a beastmode level. You should not take lightly the editing. Editing can give your document, article, manuscript a larger than life status. Learn editing or get an editor who can help you edit your article.

15)Dialogues and conversations :

This is no brainer. Learn to use dialogues, conversations which acts as catalyst to hook up your audience. However don’t use meaningless dialogues. It should be related to your topic.

16)Avoid too much adverb usage

Be careful while using adverbs. Don’t use adverb on weak verbs. It reduces the strength of the action in the sentence.

17)Put examples of small stories to engage readers

One great way of keeping your audience engaged is by writing small stories as examples to explain your topic. Your stories should be compact. It should be based on the topic of discussion.

18) Read more

In order to be a great writer, you need to be great reader. Read from newspaper, journal, articles from internet and try to list down the words, sentence you are unable to understand and find answer to your problems. What exactly you are missing – is it the tense or lack of vocabulary or something else? You can estimate your strengths.

19)Communicate

Just like soliloquy, you should try to communicate with friends in English if you want to be an English writer and see their responses. Can they understand you ?

20)Keep practicing

There is no better solution than practicing and making writing a daily habit. Keep practicing. It takes no time to be a writer but it takes time to be a great writer. Never give up your dreams and work on your writing skills.

Conclusion

Overall writing skills will grow with time provided you give your time to hone your skills. Keep learning and keep writing.

I am currently editing right now. When I first began editing, I was loth to cut any words for fear of loosing content. But once I really began to look at the story, so many words offered themselves up as unnecessary. Editing can be daunting but it is glorious to tighten up the story without loosing content.

    1. Jamie

Rightly said Jaya. Editing can be daunting and you should not loose the essence of your story.

  9. Rick Lowe

This was actually a pretty helpful article. I’ve been spending the last 2 months or so, improving my writing, and reading books about it.

I’m literally (pardon the pun!) one of those people that decides I’m going to learn something, look at a bunch of blog posts and reviews, and buy the top 5 books in that category.

I read them all, and practice as I read them.

Once I feel I have learned that skill, I move on to the next skill.

With this in mind, do you have a top 5 books to read about copywriting? I would be interested to read YOUR list, if you published it.

    1. Jamie

Thank you Rick for stopping by. I can say there is no better way than reading good books as you are doing now. Reading books is key to improving the writing skills. I study novels of different authors to hone my writing skills.

I think people far too often forget the importance of understanding our audience. If you want your audience to connect with your work, then you have to connect with your audience!

    1. Jamie

Exactly. Understanding your target audience is important .

A lot of great information here. Very useful. Honestly, I think number 20 is the best because practice is so important. In my family, we say practice makes better (not perfect) because everything is practice to get better. I definitely need to work on my writing practice. Thank you for this.
