How to Motivate Employees at Work

In any workplace managers, supervisors always think of how to motivate their employees in every possible way. When there is a lot of work pressure to meet the deadline for the project delivery , employees sometimes go mad and lose their minds. They start abusing colleagues and quarrel with their managers. This is quite a common scenario in corporate offices nowadays. So in this article I am going to discuss how a manager can motivate his/her employees at work and also how employees can motivate themselves.

#1 Effective communication

I have seen sometimes serious lack of communication between the manager and the employee leads to misunderstanding at workplace. Manager needs to communicate clearly with the corresponding employees .The employees must know exactly what task needs to be done. Managers receive over hundreds of emails everyday , but still they need to communicate with their resources/employees regarding the job role. This lack of communication should be avoided and employees take the brunt of managers without knowing what has been communicated to them earlier.

#2 Transparency is the key

Transparency must be there in any kind of work, activity, projects . All employees must know their exact job roles/task before commencing on the tasks. Managers should not commence a project until they have a proper roadmap in place, resource allocation for the project , timeline for the project. If he doesn’t have a proper roadmap, few employees will end up taking the entire burden of the entire task and few may not have any work which is not fair. The managers must address all the employees before allocating the task .He needs to be transparent to motivate all the employees, proper allocation of task to all employees. The employees must know their task details and deadline of delivery in precise manner. .

#3 Make a congenial environment

Workplace is the second home for every employees around the globe .It is indispensable requirement for the management/managers to make a safe, congenial environment. Employees must not work like robots. They should not work in a monotonous routine. It’s the prime responsibility of the managers to make the workplace a great atmosphere so employees should get motivated to work .

#4 Be Friendly with Employees

Managers should behave in a friendly manner with the employees. They hardly interact with the employees other than communicating work related tasks. Employees can only get motivation if their managers behave in friendly way. Manager should keep away their ego aside and be polite to the employees. Employee will thus get motivation at work and will be willing work more.

Even while having lunch , managers and employees discuss about only the work task .This demotivates the employees. Managers need to discuss other topics than project related stuffs. Employees will thus be motivated in this way as they also need a light break from work. Manager should cultivate this habit and make the sessions with employees more interesting so they are motivated at workplace.

#5 Appreciate And Reward The Employees

Managers must praise and appreciate all the employees in public for all their hard work But rarely a manager does so. He/she may shower praises on a single individual in public but not everyone. Maybe the individual a brilliant performer , maybe the entire task is carried by other employees who might have been neglected for their hard work.

Managers need to understand a successful work activity/project completion is a complete team work. Unless he/she praises the employees, employees won’t get any motivation at work. To make the work place a productive work environment he can reward the diligent employees. Rewarding doesn’t mean giving gifts. A simple appreciation mail is enough to boost the employees to propel and excel in the projects.

#6 Be the Leader and not a Boss

I would say a manager should behave like a leader if he/she wants to motivate the employee to be more productive at work. Behaving like a boss, always instructing the employees won’t make the employees productive . Rather, it will create a bad environment in the workplace. Managers must inspire employees by showing a demo of a sample task , not just by giving instructions. The managers should know the complexity of the task before assigning it to the employees.

If they order the employees only to see results within a given timeline without knowing the challenge, complexities of the task, they are making a mockery of themselves within the within the work place. Talented manager never discourages an employee , rather he foresees the complexities and buy time for complex projects for the employees to complete the task. This way employees can get a mental boost to work harder and swill sure deliver better throughput.

#7 Know the career goals of employees

A manager must know the career goals of all his subordinates. In order to make the employee perform better at work, manager/supervisor must talk to the employees in person. He should understand the career aspiration goals of an employees. Some talented employees are doing the same monotonous job for long time. Managers must identify them and change their job roles , may promote them depending on their performance.

#8 Brainstorm new ideas

Manager should organize meetings and brainstorm new ideas, innovations. Give all the employees to come up with new ideas that can add values to the project , timeline . This can motivate them to study and work more making the workplace a productive one.

#9 Give opportunities to employees to take ownership of the task

Employees should get the opportunities to lead by their own. They should take the responsibility of owning the task and manager should not intervene frequently .Sometimes managers do too much micro management hampering the productivity of the task. The managers/supervisors must have faith in their employees and should not nag often in their work. If the manager has faith on his faith on his employee, the employee would definitely deliver a quality work within a deadline.

#10 Explore the hidden talent from the Employees

If the manager finds the hidden talent from their employees, that can make a comfortable work environment. Suppose the manager has some employees suited for a specific task that requires technical skills. Everyone has great technical skills but if the manager finds someone having great client communication skills, someone having great writing skills, someone having good managerial skills apart from having sound technical skills. Thus a manager can motivate each and every employees by giving them proper opportunity to excel in their hidden talents.

Conclusion

In short, a manager must frame his/her strategic goals before taking up the project and delivering the tasks to his/her employees. Remember a manager should ask himself/herself , Is he/she a good manager ?

Did he/she help any employees thrive in his/her career in the long term? If not , the manager must learn all the basics of managerial skills and then take a project in a managerial role. A good manager produce future leaders in an organization. Before motivating the employees , the supervisors/managers must motivate themselves to be a successful manager..

It is in a company’s best interests to take good care of its employees needs. One way to retain staff is to keep them happy. Simple things would be providing healthy snacks that cater for those who have special diet needs. Every opportunity should be taken to get to know workers – their families, career goals, health issues etc. When employers show a keen interest in the well being of their staff, they are happy to be more productive at work, That is a win for the company.
