Finding a writing voice is an essential skill to hone. When you study the novels of different writers, you’ll realize every big authors have unique writing style and writing tone and bears authenticity in their writing. Their art of writing, scene descriptions differ from each other although they may be authors of same genre. Why is this so? It’s because they have defined their own style of writing and if you want to develop your writing voice, this article is for you. Here’s the list of activities you can do to develop the skills.
Read a lot to create your writing voice
Read numerous novels of different genres, styles, different voices and thus you will get understand/identify different authors’ writing styles. There is no substitute for reading. Reading a lot of books gives you idea of different authors writing voice. It’s a way authors connect with the readers. Whether they are using a creepy tone in their writing, funny tone, sarcastic , conversational, you can understand every style if you have read plethora of books. You can only be an author if you are a good reader. List down any 10 books of your choice and also read lot of blogs from the internet. There are amazing bloggers out there. Study their writing and you will get to know how each of the authors/bloggers/writers are different in their own way and yet their stuffs are so amazingly written.
Challenge yourself
Write random stuffs. Start with simple facts writing, then write fiction and write non fiction and study them as a reader. You will get to know in which genre and which medium your writing is connecting more. The more you write, the more you’ll explore and the more you’ll learn to identify your strength and eventually develop the writing voice. If you think you can develop fantasy world building, give a try and readers must feel your writing voice when they are reading your book. You must have clear writing intention- creepy tone, exciting, thriller tone. Proper usage of word choice, jargon, idiomatic phrases is mandatory. You must convey the message and emotions to the reader.
Define your writing tone and Writing Voice
Your tone defines the personification of your feeling about your story. The tone may differ in course of the story depending on the specific scene, characters involved and ambience. But there will be a certain specific tone which will be found frequently in the entire story. For example- comic, satirical or conversational whatever and that defines you as a writer, as your writing voice. You can write a comic story but it may also contain serious, sarcastic, formal tone too. But the crux of your story is in comical tone. Thus your writing tone gives the reader a way to experience as you want them to experience through your writing voice.
Authentic
Be original and authentic in your writing tone. You may be inspired, influenced by your favourite writers, authors and bloggers but never try to emulate them. Readers need original stuff, fresh concepts, new stories , abstract ideas. Only by practice you can be a great authentic writer whom readers identify right away after reading your story.
