Writing exercises are indispensable requirements for any aspiring writers and keep the creativity intact. So if you want to be a writer/author, you need to keep writing. Sounds easy ? No, it’s not that easy coz you will be bogged down by mischievous writer’s block. I can say writer’s block is our friend which tells us we are moving too fast.
So to write quality content , we must take proper breaks during our writing. It’s not that we would be writing continuously for hours before we drained out of content or creativity. Even if you are a content writer having years of experience in writing on wide range of topics, when it comes to creative and literary writing , its a different ball game altogether.
#1 Writing prompts – One of the basic writing exercises
Without doubts, creative writing prompts are great ways to boost your creative intent. There are plethora of information available in the internet to give you multiple creative ideas and prompts. This should help you to get into the writing mode and will be a great writing exercise.
#2 Look back to historic events of your life
If you are trying to write nonfiction, what else can be better than your own story. You reminisce your childhood days, memorable events – good or bad, childhood hobbies and pen down those in paper . Who knows you can create a masterpiece.
#3 Follow your dreams –
Sometimes our dreams have amazing stories which are sometimes beyond our comprehension. It’s difficult to remember any dream but if you do , then pen down the main points or highlights of the story of your dreams. No doubt a heck of a task as dreams are often forgotten once woken up. But dreams have crazy creative thoughts that can be an amazing spice to your creative writing .
#4 Study Newspaper
In this digital age, people have forgotten to read newspaper. Everyone now use internet web browsers to navigate to news . Remember the more newspaper you read , the creative writing skill increases. Grab a paper and start reading page after page.
#5 Take sentence from a book or journal
Take a random sentence from a book or journal. It can be a sentence that is catchy, full of hook words prompting you to imagine the story in bigger details. Just write a story out of that sentence.
#6 Write very short stories
The best way to make your writing exercises more interesting is to write 3 line stories. Very short stories which we say . You can join twitter and in the writing community , there is #vss365 , where every day a word prompt is given and you need to write a short tweet sized creative story or poem. You can participate and show your writing skills. It’s fun and you will get to interact with so many talented writers unleashing their creativity on day to day basis.
#7 Daily life, daily routine inspiration
If you are running of creative ideas in your writing, think of your daily life and definitely you’ll find enough ideas. How was your day at work? How was the new restaurant you visited last week. Just simply write something on these ideas.
#8 Write a story from short poem
This is also a great way to test your writing skills. Take a random poem from your favourite poet and try convert it into story and see how good the story panned. Once you read the story , you yourself can judge your own writing. Does it contain the same flavour as the poem? If not, no problem, try writing in different approach- change the plot or whatever till you are satisfied with your writing i.e creating the same feeling as depicted by poem or in a better way.The thing is here to enhance your creative skills spontaneously.
#9 Write, Write, Write
This is no brainer. You got to practice hard and you need to make this a habit. You also need to master the small nuances of writing process and it takes time. Gerunds, participles, grammar, infinitive, prepositions, idioms, phrases. Try using them in a story and check all the errors. Now we have so many software to check our grammatical errors like grammarly.
Conclusion
Writing exercises are something you must cultivate daily to enhance your writing and creative skills. Its not some manuscript or some poem or prose you are writing to send to a publisher. This is something which will help you to become an author if you wish to be one in future. During penning down a novel/poem/story/flashfiction , these preparations will come handy as your mind will have road map while you write. Hope this helps and good wishes to all my fellow readers who wish to become superstar writers in future.
Definitely gave me some new ideas to write about – thank you!
Brilliant tips here. I absolutely love writing but a block is almost inevitable. These will really help x
Great tips! I’ve also found that writing by hand is a good option, and also when you’re writing something like a name, or a headline, to writer multiple versions and see what stands out.
Great tips and great time for a reminder like this. I’m starting to follow my dream of writing my book! yes, sounds scary for me!! I took a challenge to write and keep up a blog as a practice, but I have to do daily writing exercises, is so easy to fall out of practice and lose the habit.
Glad to hear Barbara you are writing a book. Good luck on your writing journey.
