Simple Effective Rules for Writing for Web

If you are writing for web, you need to follow certain effective rules and ensure quality content. In this fast paced digital age, there are so much data and articles in the web. Now if you want your content to stand out from your peers of your niche, you need to write quality content and that is no brainer. Let’s dig down those golden writing rules in details.

#1 Treat your Online Content as Newspaper

It is often misled that online article should be treated as a novel or story . But the bottom line is that you need to treat it as newspaper. Just like a newspaper has a catchy title, your article must have a catchy headline that can hook the audience. Write the most important points at the top of the article. The preamble of the article should be such that the readers can skim and read the article description in the start itself. If they like the subject , they will scroll down and navigate through the entire article.

#2 Conversational tone

The article should have a meaningful conversational tone. As a writer, you must write with emotions. Online audience like emotional and personal tone which they can correlate with their own daily lives. They simply hate professional tone or instructive tone and will ignore your writing if you use those speech in your writing.

#3 Active voice

Write in active voice as it sounds pleasing and personal. Passive voice sounds like a professional and authoritative tone. Blogging is not about professional talk. Blogging is about writing content informally regarding any topic. So active voice is much preferred.

#4 Make several paragraphs for the article –

Writing an article without multiple paragraph will force readers to stay away from the article. Readers like to study in parts. It’s always useful when you are using lists if you are not comfortable in writing in paragraphs. Lists are much more readable compared to even small paragraph even if you are writing on any creative topics.
Write 500 words approximately per page . If content is good, readers will scroll down and read but to have that you must have quality content. You have to be consistent with over all word counts per page. Try write a holistic content , informative content rather than short article.

#5 Proper text formatting

The text should contain a proper mix of bold , italics, underlined words or sentences depending on your paragraph and writing skills. Take care of the indentation of the words .

#6 Proper Editing

Editing and proof reading are must before publishing the article online. Skim the article multiple times to find any grammatical and spelling errors. Ask your friend to have a look through if possible but I will suggest you do it on your own. This is your content and you should take responsibility on your own article.

#7 SEO content

You need to learn the basics of SEO. In order to be indexed in search engine fast, SEO is mandatory or else your writing will get lost in the crowd of million articles across the net if you are writing on a topic which is already covered before. So start learning basics of on page and off seo for your article to be found in serach engine pages. Don’t overstuff with keywords, use appropriate links in your article and the article should not have any duplicate content.

#8 Motive of your writing for web

You must understand your exact motive behind your writing for web.

  • Do you want your site visitors to be your potential customers?
  • Do you want them to buy a product and you must write the content accordingly and it should be helpful and cogent enough for them to understand the credibility of the product.
  • You want to answer any problem and gain visitors on your web page.
  • Do you want to keep them engaged with the topics you are writing and they can be an active participant.

Whatever be your motive, there has to be a call to action on your webpage that can make the visitors land on a specific page or help them share your content in their social network. The CTA can be a button or image or a link. CTA is very necessary to make your web content sharable across multiple platforms boosting your web traffic

#9 Navigable website, landing pages

Make sure the web page has all links, hyperlinks navigable and user can scroll down and move on to specific parts of page without any problem. Each and every section of a page should serve a purpose to the viewers and they can easily skim through the page easily.

#10 Avoid extensive vocabulary

You don’t have to show your vocabulary skills or high octane jargons in your writing. Remember web users are simple humans who are looking for information, knowledge. So don’t write phrase or jargons not easily comprehensible by general audience. Your audience is not only from English speaking countries, there will be audience from non English speaking countries.

#11 Avoid misleading anchor text

You can use hyperlinks to refer to some article if that article is only relevant to your topic. But don’t use too many anchor texts that look deceptive i.e. the links are routing to invalid page or irrelevant content. Writing for web requires proper usage of right anchor text for your specific article and that must add value to your article of discussion.

#12 Never plagiarise

This is absolutely no brainer. Never plagiarize content from anywhere . Be original ,write original and most importantly be yourself . It’s your website and you must own your content. That’s the reason, spend more time in writing quality content and you will reap great results.

Conclusion

Writing for web and making your webpage stand out takes time. I would suggest look for sample pages of different websites and get an idea of how can you create and start with your own content .
